2023/7/07 and 08 – Dusseldorf and Arnhem

From Koblenz, we sailed to Dusseldorf (7/7).
I did the “pub crawl” which was good but not what I expected. The guided walk was interesting and the 3 breweries we visited were basically pub/restaurants that brewed their own beer. Unlike in Australia, each brewery makes only 1 beer and they are all Altbier which is a bit like Toohey’s Old. There was very little discernable difference in the taste from one to the next so a bit disappointing in that regard.
Jenni chose to rest again but we went for a walk around town together after lunch.

That evening, we sailed to Arnhem in the Netherlands and so said goodbye to Germany.
The whole time in Germany and now in the Netherlands, the internet connection has been terrible and has fallen way short of expectations. I don’t know whether it is the ship’s reception or the quality of the system in Europe.
We arrived in Arnhem at 8am 8/7 and this time I went on a guided bike tour, riding some 20km over the course of 2 and 1/2 hours. We saw a little of the town but then rode out into the country where it was surprisingly hilly and densely forested as well as large areas of farmland. We then returned to the town and did the traditional ABC.
The interesting thing about this cathedral/church is that the original was very old (16th century) but was destroyed along with the rest of the town in the 2nd world war. It has now been rebuilt, bit by bit, over many years and the spire has an elevator that goes up 7 stories with incredible views from the top.

This was very unsettling – scary!
